How to Extend the Life of Your Running Shoes (And When to Recycle Them)

How to Extend the Life of Your Running Shoes (And When to Recycle Them) - TARKINE ATHLETICS

Let’s face it — running shoes aren’t cheap. And when you finally find the perfect pair, the last thing you want is for them to break down too soon. The good news? A few simple habits can keep your shoes feeling fresh for longer. And when their time’s up, we’ll show you the eco-friendly way to say goodbye.

1. Rotate Your Shoes

If you’re running often, alternate between two pairs. This gives the midsole foam time to decompress and return to its original shape, extending overall cushioning life.

2. Let Them Dry Naturally

Stuffing wet shoes in the sun or next to a heater? Nope. That breaks down glue and damages the upper. Instead, remove the insoles, stuff them with newspaper, and let them air dry in the shade.

3. Clean Them Gently

Muddy trail run? Rinse them with cool water and use a soft brush or cloth. Avoid the washing machine — it’s brutal on materials and adhesives.

4. Store Them Right

Keep your shoes in a cool, dry spot. Cramming them into a gym bag or hot car weakens the structure and shortens their lifespan.

So, When Should You Retire Them?

Most quality running shoes last 600–1000km, but the exact number depends on your weight, running style, and terrain. Watch for:

  • Flattened midsole (they feel “dead” or less springy)

  • Uneven outsole wear

  • Upper tearing or separation

  • Nagging aches you didn’t have before

If you’re unsure, listen to your body — it’ll usually tell you before your eyes do.

Out of the 110 million shoes that make their way to Australian shores each year, only 1% are collected and recycled after use. The shoes in landfills contaminate our environment by emitting chemicals into the soil and groundwater. Dyes release harmful heavy metals while soles decompose into chemicals like polyurethane. These shoe components take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfill.

Tarkine is taking responsibility for the lifecycle of running shoes. Customers are invited to return their shoes back to us.
